Old Milton County Records (now Fulton County)

Fulton was created in 1853. In 1857 Milton County (now now Fulton County) included parts of Cherokee, Forsyth and Cobb Counties. Milton was named for John Milton, Georgia's first Secretary of State and ws located North of the Chattahochee River (now Fulton County). Fulton was named for Robert Fulton, the famous inventor who experimented with a submarine boat in 1801 in France and built the Clermont, a steamboat which sailed up the Hudson River in 1807. During the Revolutionary War, Milton traveled to Charleston, South Carolina, and New Bern, North Carolina before moving to Maryland with the official records of the state while Georgia was occupied by the English. Campbell and Milton County merged with Fulton on January 1, 1932. At this time Roswell was ceded from Cobb County. Research in Fulton and Campbell Counties should be done with Milton, as they were once altogether. Early Settlers: Morgan Fields, Robert Martin, John Nix, Hiram Taylor and Dabner Yancey.

During these recession years anytime that you can save some bucks by using the Internet, this is wise. Trips to archives, court houses and libraries quickly adds up in gasoline, cost of photocopies, lunch, etc. A trip from Atlanta to the Georgia State Archives today costs me about $30 and valuable time. Lots of genealogy can be gleaned from some genealogy pay websites for a small fee and you can have access for a year! Here are some suggestions:

Subscribe to 6 genealogy websites for $150.00, one year. At equates to $25 per year per website, or $1.92 per month. Wow!

    Richmond County Court House
Richmond County Court House, Augusta, Georgia. Richmond County was formed in 1777 from St. Paul's Parish. The county seat is Augusta. One should search Richmond and Columbia records as they overlapped. Wrightsboro records are found in Richmond County as well as in Columbia County. Some of their wills are recorded in this will book. Thus, here is one place to find Quakers.

Maps were scanned in such a manner as to provide details for locating creeks, branches, rivers, lakes, churches, schools and cemeteries. This will enable you to better locate the old homeplace using the description from old non-specific deeds. Also, a convenience in locating both private and public cemeteries in the area.

Newton County Court House Newton County RecordsNewton County Court House. In 1813 Creeks still resided in this area when Governor Thorpe negotiated a treaty and the last of the Creek residents were removed from Georgia in 1833 on the Trail of Tears. Newton County was created by the Georgia General Assembly on December 24, 1821. It was named for Revolutionary War hero Sergeant John Newton and was formed from parts of Henry, Jasper, and Walton Counties. The first white settlers located in Eastern Newton County in a town then-named Winton. Settlers went further west to establish Newtonsboro. The name was later changed to Covington after General Leonard Covington, a hero in the war of 1812. In 1853 Covington was incorporated as a City. The Creek Indians roamed the land until 1813 when Governor Thorp negotiated a treaty in which the Creeks gave up their claim to the land A decade later the last of the Creek Indians were banished to Oklahoma over the "Trail of Tears." The first white settlers located in Eastern Newton County in a town then-named Winton. "The Brick Store" was built in 1822 and still stands today. Lack of adequate water caused the settlers to move further west and establish Newtonsboro. The name was later changed to Covington after General Leonard Covington, a hero in the war of 1812. In 1853 Covington was incorporated as a City. General Sherman took many treasures from Southerners and Georgians. His army marched a path of death, fire and destruction from Atlanta to Savannah. Covington residents hid their valuables in the lovely gardens of their antebellum homes. Further Research is indicated in adjoining Rockdale and DeKalb Counties.
