Burke County Records

The land that would form Burke County was ceded to the English by the Creek Treaties of 1733, 1735 and 1736. By an Act of March 15, 1758 the parish of St. George was established. The county was named for Edmund Burke, a member of the British Parliament who championed the rights of the American colonies. Between 1793 and 1905, the legislature took land from Burke County to help form the new counties of Screven (1793), Jefferson (1796), and Jenkins (1905), and to add area to Richmond County (1841). The county seat of Waynesboro was established in 1794, named after the Revolutionary War hero General. The first will book did not survive. Will Book A, as is included herein, began in 1855; however, the earliest will found in that batch was dated in 1803. Essentially, 1855 and later is more specific to the probate date than to the date in which the wills were signed.

Bibb County Court House
1960's photo Bibb County was created on Dec. 9, 1822 from portions of Jones, Monroe, Twiggs and Houston Counties. It was named for Dr. William Bibb, who was the first elected governor of Alabama. Dr. Bibb lived in Elbert County, and served in the U.S. House of Representatives in the U.S. Senate. He was appointed governor of the Territory of Alabama in 1816 and became the first elected governor of that state. In 1823 Macon was incorporated; named after Senator Nathaniel Macon of North Carolina. Researchers in Bibb County should also research the Jones County Records.

Greene County Wills and Estates

Greene County was created from Washington County in 1786 and was named after Revolutionary War hero Major-General Nathaniel Greene who issued many land grants to his veteran troops. After the war, Greene and wife Catharine built a home near Savannah called Mulberry Plantation but Green soon died, on June 19, 1786. In 1825 parts of Greene County were used to help create Taliaferro County as well as Oglethorpe and Clarke Counties between 1794 and 1877. The County Seat is Greensboro [originally spelled Greensborough and named for Maj. Gen. Nathanael Greene]. Early Settlers: John Adams, John Armor, Richard Bailey, James Blythe, Walker Brockman, Edward Cannon, Joseph Carmichael, James Fuller, Hugh Hall, John Jeter, Edward Lumpkin, Phillemon Martin, Landon Palmer, James Stewart, Thomas Thompson Sr., and William H. Watts.

McIntosh County Records

McIntosh County Court House. In January of 1736, the first group of immigrants arrived in the British Colony of Georgia to settle along the Altamaha River in a town christened New Inverness after their home in the Isle of Skye later called Darien. On 19 December 1793, the county of McIntosh was formally created from parts of Liberty, and was named in honor of one of the early immigrant families, the John Mohr MacIntosh, Chieftan. The early records were burned by General Sherman, and do not begin until ca 1848.
