    Clarke Family Bible

    To contact us Click HERE
Clarke Family Bible submitted by Leslie Olejnik. laolejnik@gmail.com

Jeannette, I am not really sure who I need to give copies of our Clarke Family Bible so I am just sending it to you in hopes you know what to do with it. You should know it's full of some great historical Georgia family's, as well as, Alabama, and South Carolina. (Clarke, Norwood, Glover, Hill, Lewis) I inherited the bible from my Grandmother who's name is Caroline Clarke Cogburn. The bible begins with MB Clarke who remains somewhat of a mystery to me. For example, what does the MB really stand for. I am thinking Major Benjamin Clarke but his gravestone in Newnan says Brantley???? I don't believe that is right since we have no other Brantley's in the family. I do know his mother was Charity Hardin Clarke but her husband is either Joseph or Edward G. Clarke. The book,"Coweta County Chronicles" names both men as MB's father in separate parts of the book. Maybe you can help me with this part. I do know MB was an orphan requiring land in the 4th district during the land lottery of 1827. MB's son Joseph W. Clarke lived in the 5th district. Still. I would like to know more about MB's parents. One other thing I do know about his mother Charity Hardin Clarke is that when her husband (either Joseph or Edward G) died she married Isaac Whitaker (had two other wives) and later moved to Texas. Charity is with MB again as an old woman in South Carolina. MB seems to have a home base there and in Georgia due to the slave trading business I am sure. You have probably seen the historical photo in the National Achieves of a slave trade business on White Hall Street in DeKalb owned by the Clarke's. The Newnan Historical Society is also interested in the bible because of the name's listed in it. I really had no idea of it's significance until I started looking up the names. For example, MB's first wife was named Frances Caroline Norwood . Her father Williamson Norwood was the second largest slave owner in South Carolina at the time of his death. I do also know that you can follow the Norwood' and Clarke's etc. through VA, SC, GA, AL and Texas. I could go on and on but please let know your thoughts on the bible. -Leslie Olejnik

Old Clinton, the first site of the court house, was built in 1809.In 1905, the county seat was moved to Gray. The earliest county records survive. Dooly County Wills and Estates

    Dooly County Court House
Dooly County Court House. Dooly County was created in 1821 by an Act of the General Assembly and was named for the famous Colonel John Dooly (1740-1780), who was killed at the Battle of Kettle Creek in 1780. The song Tom Dooly was written for him and lingers in Georgia's memory.... Hang down your head Tom Dooly...hang down your head and die.... The Georgia Land Lottery of 1821 distributed lands of the Creeks located between the Ocmulgee and Flint rivers at the signing of the Treaty of Indian Springs. Later, portions of Dooly County were used to create the following counties: Worth (1853), Wilcox (1857), Crisp (1905), and Turner (1905). Early Settlers: Levin Adams, Joseph Bridges, Ezekiel Butler, Brinkley Brown, William F. Bealle, Irwin Bullock, W. B. (Probate, Estates, Wills, etc.)

The Site of Savannah was established and drawn out by General James Oglethorpe. This is the seat of the first English settlement in Georgia. 114 persons came with Oglethorpe on his first voyage and erected huts with saw-palm roofs. Within a year, over one hundred wooden homes were constructed, while vessels transported more settlers. Several parishes governed the area, viz: Christ Church, St. Andrews, and St. Marys. After the Revolutionary War, the parishes were dispensed with as boundaries and counties established. Chatham was named for William Lord Pitt, Earl of Chatham. Many prominent citizens emerged from the first settlers into the settled gentry and poltical figures. During the American Revolution, Loyalists marked as traitors escaped into Florida and to Bermuda where they established plantations. If you have lost someone from this period, that is where to search!

Earliest Settlers: Charles Alexander, Michael Bottomley, Jonathan Clark, Raymond Demere, Thomas Dawson, William Gilbert, John Houstoun, William Jordan, Alexander Lesley, David Montaigut, William Mortimer, John Mackay, Charles Ogilvie, Daniel Pendleton, Augustus Rogers, Richard Seymore, Nicholas Witzen, and Nathaniel Zettler.

    DeKalb County Records

    DeKalb County Court House
DeKalb County Court House, Decatur, Georgia. DeKalb County was created in 1822 after the Muskogee (Creeks) Indians ceded the lands by treaty and was taken from Henry, Gwinnett and Fayette Counties. It was named for Baron Johann DeKalb, a German hero of the American Revolution. In 1853 Fulton County was created from the northern portion of DeKalb County. Many of the settlers to DeKalb County were in search of new lands and were farmers. When researching DeKalb County, Henry (the parent County) and Fulton Counties should also be researched. Unfortunately, the estate records do not begin until 1840. If you have an ancestor who resided within the boundaries of the present-day Atlanta, those records will be found in DeKalb County. Remember, the journey from Atlanta to present-day Decatur to file a deed, will, or other record was quite a trip.
