Taliferro County Court House
Taliaferro County Court House. Taliaferro (pronounced "Tol-i-ver") County was established in 1825 by an Act of the General Assembly and was taken from portions of Greene, Hancock, Oglethorpe, Warren, and Wilkes counties. It was named after Colonel Benjamin Taliaferro, Revolutionary War hero; served in the US House of Representatives from 1799 to 1802. Crawfordville is the county seat. Early Settlers: John Lightfoot, Benjamin Jones Sr., Henry Dewberry, David Lockett, Charles Beazley, Joel Terrell, John L. Bird, John Perkins, William Janes, General Aaron Gruer, Eli Hart, John Veazey.

Spalding County Court House. Spalding County was created in 1851. Griffin is the county seat. Spalding County was named for Thomas Spalding from the Scottish Highlands who came to Georgia with Oglethorpe whose great-grandfather, John Mohr McIntosh, chieftain of the clan which settled Darien.

Tattnall County Court House
Tattnall County Court House. Tattnall County was created from Montgomery County on Dec. 5, 1801 and was named for Josiah Tattnall, Jr. who gained popularity in helping to repeal the infamous Yazoo Act, later filling the term of U. S. Senator, James Jackson. Later, parts of Tattnall County were used to help create Toombs County (1905) and Candler and Evans counties (1914). The county seat is Reidsville.

Thomas County was created from Decatur and Irwin Counties by an Act of the General Assembly on December 23, 1825. It was named for General Jett Thomas, a hero of the War of 1812. Portions of Thomas County later were used to form Colquitt County (1856), Brooks County (1858), and Grady County (1905). The county seat is Thomasville.

Telfair County Records

Telfair County Court House
Telfair County Court House. Telfair County was created from Wilkinson County by an act of the General Assembly approved Dec. 10, 1807 and was named for former governor and congressman Edward Telfair (1735-1807). In 1812, the legislature transferred the portion of Telfair County between the Oconee and Little Ocmulgee rivers to Montgomery County. In 1819 and 1825, the legislature transferred respectively land lots 1 and 6 in Appling County to Telfair County. As a result, Telfair included land south of the Ocmulgee River until 1854 when the legislature transferred this area to Coffee County. The county seat is McRae, Georgia. Early Settlers: George Browning, Barnabus Livingston, Mitchell Wilcox.

Twiggs County Records

Twiggs County Court House
Twiggs County Court House. Twiggs County was created in 1809 from Wilkinson County and was named for General John Twiggs, a prominent leader in the Revolutionary War and the Indian Wars. Parts of the county was added to Bibb County in 1833, 1842, 1849, 1851, 1875, 1876 and 1877. Neighbouring counties are: Wilkinson, Bleckly, Houston,Bibb and Jones. The Ocmulgee river borders the county on the west. The county seat was first in Marion, named after General Francis Marion but in 1868 it was moved to Jeffersonville 6 miles east of Marion. The first settlers were named in White's Historical Collections of Georgia as follows: Arthur Fort, Ezekial Wimberly, William Perry, Henry Wall, William Crocker, General Tarver, Ira Peck, John Fulton, John Everitt, D. Williams, Joel Denson, S. Jones, Willis Hodgins, Milton Wilder, Josiah Murphy, Davis Lowery, C. Johnson, C. A. Thorpe, John Davis, C. W. Melton, B. Ray, S. Harrell, T. Harrington, H. Sullivan, Others were General Ezekial Wimberly, Colonel James W. Fannin, Thaddeus Oliver, General Hartwell H. Tarver, Robert L. Perryman, Robert A. Everett, Stephen F. Miller, Governor James M. Smith, Judge A.T. MacIntyre, Dr. James E. Dickey, General Philip Cook, Honorable Dudley N. Hughes, J. A. Barclay, S. J. Bond, Wesley Binn, Victoria Bryant, Daniel Bullard, John Cribb, Joshua Chance, George Chapman Sr., John H. Denson. The court house of Twiggs County was destroyed by fire February 7, 1901, thus destroying the early wills and other records. County seat: Jeffersonville.
